Cellulite is the dimpled appearance of the skin that is mostly seen on the hips, the thighs and the buttocks. Sometimes referred to as ‘cottage cheese’, this is more common in women than in men. Anyone can have cellulite, and the best way to avoid it is to learn about the causes of cellulite so that you can avoid and manage them properly.

Hormones are among the significant causes of cellulite. It is believed that different hormones help in the storage of fat in the body. These too help in the metabolism of subcutaneous fat layer wherein cellulite can develop if these are not functioning properly. Estrogen is an important hormone that can either initiate or aggravate cellulite. Other hormones that are believed to be the causes of cellulite are insulin, prolactin, noradrenaline and other thyroid hormones. In women, cellulites are likely to develop when there are hormonal changes in the body such as puberty, pregnancy, when taking birth control pills and during menopause.

Genetics are also among the common causes of cellulite. When you have a family member who has cellulites, then there are higher chances of you having cellulite too. Genes are also among the predisposing factors considered as causes of cellulite that can lead to the development of cellulite. These are race, gender, biotype and the distribution of subcutaneous fat in the body. These are non-modifiable factors so you cannot do anything to change or avoid them.

Diet and lifestyle are also very common causes of cellulite and these can be easily managed. A diet that contains too much fats, carbohydrates and salt is one of the common causes of cellulite. When you consume too much processed foods, caffeine and alcohol, these too are considered as causes of cellulite, especially when there is too little fiber in your diet. Having crash diets is also among the causes of cellulite, especially when you do it frequently. What happens during crash diet is that the body will think that it is starving, thereby consuming the saturated fats that are stored in the body which will then help build cellulite.

Poor water intake is one of the causes of cellulite. Cellulite is a mixture of water, fats and toxic wastes that was not eliminated by the body. To get rid of this mixture, drinking plenty of water will be helpful. Not enough water then is included in the causes of cellulite because you are not helping your body flush out the toxins that were accumulated. Among the causes of cellulite is smoking which can also lead to the development of several other diseases. When you smoke, the connective tissues in your body are damaged which will then lead to cellulite development. The damaged connective tissues cause the dimpled appearance of cellulites.

From the causes of cellulite, a sedentary lifestyle is one of the most common. If you have a sedentary lifestyle, there will be poor muscle tone and circulation in your body which then causes cellulite. Lack of exercise will cause a hardening in the connective tissue which causes the dimples which was mentioned above. Stress is also one of the causes of cellulite since the catecholamine levels in the body are increased, which is believed to be associated with cellulite development.

When you know the causes of cellulite, then you will be able to manage those that can be avoided such as sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and poor water intake. Even if you have genetic predisposition and the other non-modifiable causes of cellulite, then you can avoid the others so as to decrease your chances of having cellulite.
